Biden Decree Must Become Real Policy, Reader Says | Opinion
Finally, good news for the agricultural and food industries.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order aimed at breaking monopoly control and promoting competition in several sectors, including agriculture and food.
This executive decree is a great first step in leveling the playing field for independent family farmers who have taken it on the chin because of the huge multinational corporate giants who have dominated the livestock industry for decades.
This extreme concentration of companies directly lowers the prices paid by farmers and can ultimately lead to bankruptcy. It also increases the price you end up paying at the grocery store for the meat.
A top priority ahead of this executive decree must be tougher antitrust laws that are diligently enforced to break this corporate cabal in the livestock industry that endangers our food security and drives out the independent family farmer. .
Another top priority should be to restore mandatory country-of-origin labeling that allows American farmers to better market their beef and consumers to know where the beef they are buying comes from.
And, finally, it’s time for the United States Department of Agriculture to start tracking accurately the amount of farmland owned by foreign companies in the United States and for Congress to take action to end our land ownership. agricultural products by foreign companies. This is urgently needed to protect our food security and our national security.
It is up to us to ensure that this decree does not end with good ideas and in fact brings much needed positive changes for our farming families and for the agriculture and food industries.
